Life Requires Free Energy
Life requires order. This order is gained through organization, growth, and reproduction which requires a constant supply of energy. The first law of thermodynamics states the energy cannot be created or destroyed. Life would be impossible without the sun. The energy from the sun is taken in by plants. Plants take in the rays of the sun and absorb it in the chloroplast through a pigment called chlorphyl. Using light, water, and carbon dioxide, plants then convert it into chemical energy. The food chain begins with the plants, and since energy can only be transferred, through each organism that is eaten, energy is acquired.
Free energy allows for us to organize things in our body, grow throughout time, eventually reproduce, maintain homeostasis, and for internal storage.
